I've had the really old version of this bit for a long time. This is a brace bit, but for doweling etc, it's incredible to have the infinite adjustability.The key to using it at larger sizes in harder woods is to drill many (8-10) smaller holes (5/16ths) that are contained within the circle where you intend to drill the larger hole with this bit.This technique removes a large amount of material and takes a huge amount of stress off of this bit as it plucks out the chips. Bit came today, the large bore bit was mounted and the small bore was loose. The small bore bit will not fit into the holder. I'm going to have to remove about 0.003 just to get the small bit to mount. The cutting lip on both large and small bits is loaded with burrs and badly in need of a polish - tool marks all over the cutting surfaces. It will be awhile before this is suitable for use.Be forewarned - not obvious, but doesn't fit into electric (3sided) drill chucks - only fits 4-sided hand drillsIt's exactly what I needed. High quality tool.It is a piece of junk. Charged American price for cheep China crapWOrked perfectly for about 8-10 cuts, then after, you can tighten down the bit to keep a precise measurement. Great idea, but wont work for long.This bit was unusable as the machining was terribly done. There was no way to tighten the bit and was therefore useless. However, I contacted Amazon and the replacement just arrived today several days early. I haven't tried it yet but it looks like it will work. Great service. Thank you.Works well. The "bit diameter" hold down screw needs to be torqued well to maintain the chosen diameter though.It is exactly what I was wanting. Good steel, sharp and adjustable. A perfect tool for cutting door hardware openings and such.
